In mid-2020, I suffered a severe knee trauma, which resulted in the need to rebuild all leg and core muscles. Essentially learning to walk again.
Following extensive physiotherapy from Lisa Mann of the Jersey Sports and Spinal Clinic, I was recommended Lucy O’Sullivan (strength by lucy) for strength and rehabilitation coaching. As a sufferer of a blood clotting disorder, I knew how important and difficult this next phase was going to be for me. I was worried that a coach wouldn’t understand my condition and how it would impact my recovery.
It was evident straight away that Lucy wasn’t a normal coach. I semi-knew her from my last gym and I was aware of her extensive list of qualifications and this reassured me.
Lucy spent a great deal of time getting to know me, my condition and my injury. This was vital in putting together a rehab plan to get me “back on my feet”.
My training started during lockdown. We couldn’t train in the gym. We couldn’t even venture out. Lucy was there on the end of a FaceTime call every week. We pushed hard but always within my limits. I grew to trust Lucy and she in turn took the time to get to know me. She quickly picked up on areas I needed to be encouraged and areas I need to be reigned in. Lucy didn’t accept, “I can’t” but always pushed me to try. And I did (with the help of my “trusty staff”).
When the gyms opened and we were able to finally train face to face, Lucy was so very attentive in making sure what I was doing was correct. By this point, we were starting to make real progress. We discussed my goals, what I wanted to achieve now that I was more mobile. Lucy set to work designing a plan to help me get there.
The physical struggle was only half the battle. What I wasn’t prepared for was Lucy’s emotional support. How that girl manages to maintain a smile for 9 hours a day, I’ll never know. Week after week, she was there for me and for this I can’t thank her enough.
Fast forward nearly two years of rehab and strength conditioning and I’ve achieved things I never thought I could following my injury. Hitting my target of a body weight squat and a 100kg + deadlift were my biggest achievements.
I’ve now graduated from Lucy’s school of rehab. I have achieved what I set out to achieve but my journey is far from over. I will take with me the techniques and kind words Lucy has taught and given me. I will seek to keep my strength up so I never have to go through this again.
Thank you, Lucy.
